Cowboys command control of Week 14 Power Rankings

The 11-1 Cowboys are undoubtedly the top vote-getter in this week's rankings, but there's still room for intrigue on where exactly the AFC powerhouses fall in behind No. 1.

Sources: LeBron not staying at NYC Trump hotel

LeBron James is among a group of Cavaliers who do not plan to stay with the team at a New York hotel bearing the name of President-elect Donald Trump, according to sources.

49ers offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins says Colin Kaepernick will remain the starting quarterback this week against the Jets.

Saints RB Deuce McAllister, a friend and former teammate of Will Smith's is the first witness called by the state. But defense objecting since he was present throughout opening arguments. Court overruled objection, let's him testify.

The coaching carousel isn't done spinning, but after Baylor announced it hired Temple's Matt Ruhle to be its new head coach, it looks like Sonny Dykes will remain at California. It's the second year in a row Dykes has pursued other jobs only not to be hired, which doesn't bode well for his future in Berkeley. It's hard to see the Dykes-Cal pairing last past the 2017 season.

Zach Randolph has rejoined the Grizzlies and is expected to play tonight against the 76ers. Randolph, Memphis' sixth man and emotional leader, missed the last seven games while on personal leaving following the death of his mother, Mae.

Jeremy Maclin is scheduled to be a full participant today in the Chiefs' only full practice session of the week.

Andy Reid: "everybody is going to practice today". Should indicate Jeremy Maclin is back.

Saints QB Drew Brees, Steve Gleason and their wives have joined some of Will Smith's other former teammates at courthouse to support Smith's wife Racquel, who is expected to testify today. Opening statements have wrapped up in the trial of Smith's shooter Cardell Hayes. Also in attendance: Deuce McAllister, Roman Harper, Jahri Evans and Fred McAfee.

The Nationals are telling teams that if they complete their deal for Chris Sale, they would make Gio Gonzalez available. In a light free agent pitching market should have no trouble moving him.

Defense attorney for Cardell Hayes says Hayes didn't shoot Will Smith until after Smith reached into his car and opened his glove box and began to turn back. The attorney, Jay Daniels, said the jury will hear that the driver and passengers of Smith's car were being "very aggressive" and that Smith took a few swings at Hayes, then Smith's wife tried to pull him away. Daniels says Hayes did not originally have a gun in his hand, and he was taunted by Smith's acquaintance Richard Hernandez, then by Smith, who said, "Oh, you got a gun? I got a gun, too, and I'm gonna show you what to do with it."

Carmelo Anthony's averaging career-lows - or near career-lows -- in minutes, usage, field goal attempts per game and turnovers. His 3 game-sealing shots have drawn attention, but Anthony's also been comfortable deferring to teammates:

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Shady McCoy - whom he's known since his Pitt days - is 'still dominating football games.'

Mike Zimmer is back at Vikings practice, coaching with his right eye covered.

Defense attorney Jay Daniels says Will Smith's "fantastic football career" and charity involvement are not on trial. Said in order for the jury to believe the state's case, they need to accept that it was a road rage incident that caused Hayes to "lose his mind" and decide to take another man's life over a minor accident. ... Said months earlier, Hayes was a victim of another hit and run, followed the car to write down the license plate and reported it with no incident or fight involved. Said that was his intent again after he believed he was hit-and-run by Will Smith.

Matt Rhule has been diverse in his career: offense and defense, college and NFL, different spots around the country. A few weeks ago, I was told how much a certain Pac-12 job could interest him despite his northeast roots. This is another new territory for Rhule, but he's used to it.

The latest forecast for Chiefs-Raiders has Thursday night's kickoff temperature right around 20 degrees. It'll feel closer to 10. The Raiders haven't played a game in cold like this since 2007...just months after Derek Carr got his drivers license.

If Red Sox are able to sign free agent Mitch Moreland, it will please David Ortiz. In a conversation last week in the D.R., Ortiz asked who won AL Gold Glove at first base. Told it was Moreland, Ortiz said, "I always believed that kid could be special. It depends on how much (a team) plays him."

Ravens are back as the No. 1 defense in the NFL, allowing 296.1 yards per game. Surprisingly, the Ravens have only finished one season as the top-ranked defense (2006). Baltimore defensive coordinator Dean Pees goes against his former team on Monday night, when Ravens play at the Patriots.

The assistant DA is beginning his opening statements in the trial of Will Smith's shooter, Cardell Hayes. He said Smith's wife Racquel -- who was also shot in the legs on that April night -- will be one of the first to testify. The assistant DA, Jason Napoli, came right out and talked about Smith's role with the Saints and said, "We knew Will for defense. Ironically he died in completely the opposite way. He died defenseless. He died unarmed."

The average ticket price for Derek Jeter Day on Mother's Day is $771, according to TicketiQ.

One of the themes that emerged from the Jets' post-game locker room was the issue of effort. DE Mo Wilkerson said, "Guys have to play harder. We played like s---." Coach Todd Bowles said, "I don't think we had a lot of effort." Whoa, that's a harsh assessment. A fed up Bowles added, "We're going to see who wants to play. We're going to fight and play until the end and play the guys that want to play." Look for some lineup changes other that the QB switch.

Bob Holtzman ESPN

Interesting side note heading into Thursday's Chiefs-Raiders showdown: Derek Carr made his first pro bowl last season and wound up playing in Hawaii for Andy Reid and his Chiefs staff. Reid said it was a chance to "get to know (Carr) and how he's wired". I was there and saw Reid spend quite a bit of time working with the quarterbacks (i.e. gathering intel). By the way, Carr's lowest QBR this season? Week 6 vs Kansas City.

An important change in Hall of Fame voting. The Baseball Writers vote to make all ballots public starting in 2018. Long overdue

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Baseball writers vote to make ALL Hall of Fame ballots public beginning with the 2018 class. No more anonymity. The full list of voters and their choices will be released seven days after the official announcement of which candidates are selected, beginning in January 2018. This does not take effect for the class to be announced next month. Voters, one last time, can optionally reveal their ballots.

Big advantage of the Brewers' acquisition of Travis Shaw: Jonathan Villar is likely to now see the majority (if not all) of his PAs at second base, giving him rare 2B/3B/SS fantasy eligibility quickly in 2017. Villar is the only player in history to steal 50 or more bases in a season in which he made at least 10 appearances at each of those three infield positions.
