Football's dumbest unwritten rules

"You have to take the points here." "Don't go for two until you have to." "Run the ball here because if you don't go anywhere you can just run out the clock." It's time for unwritten rules to go.

Will Ezekiel Elliott maintain his torrid pace?

Only one other rookie in the past 30 years has rushed for more yards than Ezekiel Elliott in his first six games. What does it mean for his short-term and long-term future?

Lot of hype about Boston's defense coming into the season but the Celtics have given up 147 points through five quarters. Brad Stevens when asked about his defense being better this year: "I think defense is one of those things that you gotta go out there and do it. It's not about talking about it. It's not about the anticipation of how good we can be. That's an everyday commitment."

Kevin Seifert NFL Nation

Jaguars DB Jalen Ramsey isn't doing anything to convince anyone that he's mature enough to be a superstar in the NFL. He sure has the talent. But that hit out of bounds was one of the least defensible decisions we've seen -- from anyone -- this season.

Sefolosha finishes in transition with dunk

Thabo Sefolosha gets his hand in front of Trey Burke's pass and goes the distance for the reverse slam.

So now it's 21 games in a row since the Jaguars have scored a TD on their opening possession.

James Conner has two touchdowns for Pittsburgh, which has climbed back into its game against Virginia Tech at halftime. Though the Hokies have dominated in virtually every category, the one area they will look to improve on in the second half is red-zone offense. They settled for three field goals on their first three trips inside the 20, helping keep the game close.

Conner punches in second TD of the night

James Conner takes the handoff and powers up the middle for his second touchdown of the game. No. 25 Virginia Tech leads Pitt 16-14 at halftime.

Howard grabs nine boards in first quarter

In his regular season debut with the Hawks, Dwight Howard scored four points and recorded nine rebounds in the first quarter against the Wizards.

Pittsburgh cornerback Phillipie Motley was helped off the field with an apparent leg injury, a blow to an already depleted secondary. Terrish Webb and Avonte Maddox have been injured, so losing another defensive back from a group that's had its share of struggles has to hurt.

James Conner TD cuts into Hokies' lead

The Pitt RB caps off an eight-play, 84-yard drive with a six-yard run up the middle to give the Panthers their first points of the game. No. 25 Virginia Tech leads 9-7 in the second quarter on ESPN.

USC looks to extend its winning streak to four games against Cal later tonight (7:30 p.m. PT, ESPN). The Trojans sit a game back of Colorado and Utah in the Pac-12 title race.

Virginia Tech's Ford makes tough catch

Jerod Evans' deep 26-yard pass to Isaiah Ford bounces around between the Tech WR and a Pitt defender before Ford finally gains control. It led to a field goal that gave the Hokies a 9-0 lead on ESPN.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

This is how poorly Pitt played in the first quarter: two turnovers, zero first downs, six total plays, 12 total yards and four penalties. The Panthers defense has bailed the offense out, as Virginia Tech leads 6-0.

Paul Kuharsky ESPN Staff Writer

Last time he played the Jaguars at home, Marcus Mariota ran for an 87-yard TD.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Could these last two possessions come back and hurt Virginia Tech? The Hokies forced a fumble and an interception, but settled for just a field goal as a result. Virginia Tech has dominated the plays and time of possession in the first quarter but only leads 6-0.

Paul Kuharsky ESPN Staff Writer

Kendall Wright caught a 48-yard TD two games ago. I expect the Titans to take deep shots early against the Jaguars.

Hokies recover Pitt fumble on kickoff

After Virginia Tech took a 3-0 lead on the opening drive, Pittsburgh fumbles on the kickoff and the Hokies recover. They had to settle for a field goal, expanding the lead to 6-0.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Pitt returner Quadree Henderson made a rare mistake on a kickoff return, fumbling the ball away. The player who caused it? Freshman Divine Deablo, wearing Frank Beamer's No. 25 -- an honor bestowed on the special teams player of the week. The Hokies had great field position but were stuffed by one of the best run defenses in the country and settled for a field goal.

DeMarco Murray hasn't usurped Earl Campbell or Eddie George yet for these two.

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (knee/right pectoral) was listed as a limited practice participant for the second straight day Thursday. Prior to this week, Wilson had never been limited during a practice, and he's never missed a start in his NFL career. Wilson said before practice that his plan is to play through the pec injury, which he sustained during Sunday night's game against the Cardinals. Safety Kam Chancellor (groin), meanwhile, did not practice. Chancellor has missed the past two games.

Paul Kuharsky ESPN Staff Writer

Two of the Titans' three second-round picks are inactive: OLB Kevin Dodd and DL Austin Johnson. Dodd was questionable with foot soreness. Also inactive: CB Perrish Cox, LG Quinton Spain, FS Rashad Johnson, WR Harry Douglas, TE Jace Amaro.

The wait is over tomorrow as the first World Series game will be played here since October 10, 1945

Paul Kuharsky ESPN Staff Writer

Cornerback Valentino Blake is likely to be a factor in this game with Perrish Cox out with a concussion.

Mike DiRocco ESPN Staff Writer

Jaguars inactives: QB Brandon Allen, WR Rashad Greene, CB Josh Johnson, RB Corey Grant, DE Jared Odrick, OLBryce Harris, TE Neal Sterling.

Virginia Tech's trip to Pittsburgh is a sneaky important game in the ACC Coastal. The Hokies are 3-1 in conference play and currently have a 44 percent chance to win the division, according to our Football Power Index. A win in Pittsburgh would increase Virginia Tech's chances to win the Coastal to about 68 percent, but a loss would put the North Carolina in the driver's seat.
