LSU athletics director Joe Alleva introduced Ed Orgeron as the Tigers' interim coach on Monday, one day after longtime coach Les Miles was fired after a 2-2 start. Orgeron, 55, was USC's interim coach in 2013 after Lane Kiffin was fired. The Trojans went 6-2 under his watch with quarterback Cody Kessler running the offense. It figures to be more difficult at LSU, which has five games left against ranked does, including a Nov. 5 home game against No. 1 Alabama.

Shane Vereen's loss is a significant one for the Giants' offense. Ben McAdoo has a clearly defined role in the offense for him as the running back in the two-minute drill and on third downs. No other back on the roster offers what he does in terms of receiving and pass-protection ability. Orleans Darkwa likely gets a larger role, but not an equivalent one. Scheme changes likely will be necessary.

A day after LSU fires Les Miles, Nick Saban calls Miles one of his more respected colleagues. "I kind of hate it that a man wins a national championships, wins two SEC titles and doesn't make it through the season. It is what it is, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for Les Miles and what he was able to accomplish there."

Oregon landed a commitment from the nation's No. 217 overall prospect, athlete Jaylon Redd. Redd has the ability to play cornerback or receiver in college and gives the Ducks another speedy athlete on that roster. He is the fourth ESPN 300 prospect to commit to Oregon in this class, joining cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, tight end Tre' McKitty and defensive end Langi Tuifua. It's also another recruiting victory in Southern California, as the Ducks now have five commitments from that area.

An LSU official told me Sunday's firing of former coach Les Miles might end up "being the best thing for him and us."
