Cowboys command control of Week 14 Power Rankings

The 11-1 Cowboys are undoubtedly the top vote-getter in this week's rankings, but there's still room for intrigue on where exactly the AFC powerhouses fall in behind No. 1.

If Red Sox are able to sign free agent Mitch Moreland, it will please David Ortiz. In a conversation last week in the D.R., Ortiz asked who won AL Gold Glove at first base. Told it was Moreland, Ortiz said, "I always believed that kid could be special. It depends on how much (a team) plays him."

Ravens are back as the No. 1 defense in the NFL, allowing 296.1 yards per game. Surprisingly, the Ravens have only finished one season as the top-ranked defense (2006). Baltimore defensive coordinator Dean Pees goes against his former team on Monday night, when Ravens play at the Patriots.

The assistant DA is beginning his opening statements in the trial of Will Smith's shooter, Cardell Hayes. He said Smith's wife Racquel -- who was also shot in the legs on that April night -- will be one of the first to testify. The assistant DA, Jason Napoli, came right out and talked about Smith's role with the Saints and said, "We knew Will for defense. Ironically he died in completely the opposite way. He died defenseless. He died unarmed."

The average ticket price for Derek Jeter Day on Mother's Day is $771, according to TicketiQ.

One of the themes that emerged from the Jets' post-game locker room was the issue of effort. DE Mo Wilkerson said, "Guys have to play harder. We played like s---." Coach Todd Bowles said, "I don't think we had a lot of effort." Whoa, that's a harsh assessment. A fed up Bowles added, "We're going to see who wants to play. We're going to fight and play until the end and play the guys that want to play." Look for some lineup changes other that the QB switch.

Interesting side note heading into Thursday's Chiefs-Raiders showdown: Derek Carr made his first pro bowl last season and wound up playing in Hawaii for Andy Reid and his Chiefs staff. Reid said it was a chance to "get to know (Carr) and how he's wired". I was there and saw Reid spend quite a bit of time working with the quarterbacks (i.e. gathering intel). By the way, Carr's lowest QBR this season? Week 6 vs Kansas City.

An important change in Hall of Fame voting. The Baseball Writers vote to make all ballots public starting in 2018. Long overdue

MLB

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Baseball writers vote to make ALL Hall of Fame ballots public beginning with the 2018 class. No more anonymity. The full list of voters and their choices will be released seven days after the official announcement of which candidates are selected, beginning in January 2018. This does not take effect for the class to be announced next month. Voters, one last time, can optionally reveal their ballots.

Big advantage of the Brewers' acquisition of Travis Shaw: Jonathan Villar is likely to now see the majority (if not all) of his PAs at second base, giving him rare 2B/3B/SS fantasy eligibility quickly in 2017. Villar is the only player in history to steal 50 or more bases in a season in which he made at least 10 appearances at each of those three infield positions.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

The decision to include Travis Shaw in the trade for Tyler Thornburg underscores this comment Monday from John Farrell: "One of the keys for us is going to be Panda." Yes, indeed, Red Sox are counting on Pablo Sandoval.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Fast facts on Tyler Thornburg, Red Sox's new setup man: He's 28, posted 2.15 ERA, 13 saves and 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings in 67 appearances for the Brewers. Dave Dombrowski said he wanted someone with closer ability. Thornburg took over as Brewers closer after Jeremy Jeffress was traded at deadline.

The best indication that Edwin Encarnacion isn't getting the offers he's looking for: Agent Paul Kinzer telling teams there's no hurry to get him signed. Indians, Rockies interested. But Red Sox appear "very unlikely."

Thomas Bjorn has been named Europe's Ryder Cup captain for 2018. The 45-year-old from Denmark has four times been a vice-captain for the team and three times a player -- each for a winning side. He will lead a European squad in Paris on home soil, where they haven't lost since 1993.

The Giants not all that well represented in fan Pro Bowl voting. Only Odell Beckham Jr. and Landon Collin in Top 5 at their position. Janoris Jenkins, Damon Harrison, Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, Olivier Vernon and JPP are other Giants that deserve consideration. Cowboys very well represented. Dak Prescott has more votes than Tom Brady and is the top QB.

Tim MacMahon ESPN Staff Writer

Rick Carlisle: Mavs getting outrebounded by 20 by Hornets "shouldn't happen. That points to effort, which I don't like to say about this team, but I've got to look at it. We'll see. That's not good." It didn't help that Andrew Bogut (6 rebounds in 11 minutes) got hurt late in the first quarter.

Mike Wells ESPN Staff Writer

Lost in the night was that Colts coach Chuck Pagano said linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and offensive lineman Denzelle Good are both in the NFL's concussion protocol.
