Why superteams don't win the World Series

The Cubs were baseball's best team with 103 regular-season wins, but just two teams with the outright best record in MLB's wild-card era have won it all. Why does record mean nothing in October?

Blame Grigson, not Luck, for Colts' mess

"When you pay Andrew what we did, it's going to take some time to build on the other side of the ball," said Colts GM Ryan Grigson, who has had plenty of time and not much to show for it in Indy.

Texas forces fumble near goal line

Kansas State's Charles Jones fumbles before reaching the end zone and Texas recovers for a touchback. The Longhorns trail 21-7 in the third quarter.

UCF takes first lead over UConn

McKenzie Milton connects with Adrian Killins for a 39-yard TD. The Knights, who had trailed all day, now lead 21-16 in the third quarter.

Texas opened the third quarter with possession, badly in need of something good to happen -- and showed little creativity in handing twice to D'Onta Foreman, who got 4 yards before a broken-play scramble by Buechele came up short. Hard to believe that's what the Longhorns devised in the locker room at halftime. They seem out of ideas.

AccuWeather is reporting more seasonal temperatures in Chicago on Saturday for Game 6 of the NLCS than the warm weather earlier in the series. Temperature at first pitch is expected to be 57 degrees, dipping to as low as 53 by the end of the game. No precipitation is expected, and a light wind at 7 mph will blow out toward center.

Sheer dominance in all aspects by Louisville, which leads NC State 44-0 at halftime. The Cardinals outgained the Wolfpack 390-54, forced three turnovers and blocked a punt. Louisville only has one marquee game left -- at Houston on Nov. 17 -- so it needs to impress to stay in the playoff hunt.

Blocked punt adds to NC State's misery

Louisville blocked NC State's punt late in the second quarter, which set up a Cardinals field goal to make it 44-0.

Jackson's latest TD pass makes it 41-0

Lamar Jackson accounts for his fourth TD of the first half with a 16-yard pass to Jamari Staples. NC State trails 41-0.

Kyrie Irving, wearing a soft brace on his left calf, has gone through practice without a hitch the last two days.

K-State extends lead before halftime

Jesse Ertz throws a strike to Byron Pringle for an 8-yard TD with nine seconds left before halftime. Kansas State leads Texas 21-7.

The last time Trevor Knight faced Alabama he was an Oklahoma Sooner completing 72.7 percent of his passes. But he hasn't hit the 60 percent threshold in a game all season at Texas A&M. It's hard to imagine the Aggies pulling off the upset if he's not more accurate with the football today.

Wisconsin takes a 7-6 lead against Iowa into halftime, but the Badgers blew a golden opportunity when tailback Corey Clement fumbled at the goal line in the final minute. Wisconsin QB Bart Houston entered the game for one series, apparently as part of a pre-planned package, and led the only touchdown drive. Houston's 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Troy Fumagalli has been the difference. Iowa has only 137 yards of total offense but is hanging tough.

Lamar Jackson, Louisville piling it on

Jackson throws on the run to Cole Hikutini for a 3-yard TD. Jackson has accounted for three TDs and No. 7 Louisville leads NC State 34-0.

South Carolina was the last FBS team that hadn't scored more than 20 points in a game this season, per ESPN Stats and Information. The Gamecocks have 27 so far vs. UMass late in the second quarter.

Iowa forces turnover on goal line

Wisconsin's Corey Clement fumbles into the end zone and Iowa jumps on it for a touchback. No. 10 Wisconsin leads 7-3 on ESPN.

Austin Ward ESPN Staff Writer

No rust showing for Mitch Leidner in his return to the Minnesota lineup at QB. The Gophers aren't asking their leader to do a whole lot in the passing game, but he's completed 8 of his 10 throws for 139 yards to complement a powerful rushing attack and build a lead at home against Rutgers.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Deflating drive for Texas, which had life after Duvernay's touchdown, then allowed K-State's very mediocre offense to go 75 yards in nine plays and score on Jesse Ertz's 8-yard strike to Byron Pringle. The Wildcats have accumulated 244 yards. (They average 342 this season.) K-State leads 21-7 at halftime.

West Virginia fans await the team's arrival. Players and coaches will touch the coal on their way inside Milan Puskar Stadium.

Texas on the board with 80-yard TD pass

Shane Buechele goes deep down the sideline to Devin Duvernay for an 80-yard TD. Kansas State leads 14-7 on ESPNU.

Max Olson ESPN Staff Writer

Kansas is up 13-10 at home against Oklahoma State and doing a solid job on defense today. Believe it or not, the Jayhawks rank No. 1 in the Big 12 on third-down defense and No. 2 in pass defense this season. Can't keep settling for field goals on offense, though.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Devin Duvernay ran straight past Duke Shelley for an 80-yard touchdown catch from Shane Buechele. That could not have looked easier for Texas, which has cut Kansas State's lead in half at 14-7 with four minutes left in the first half.

USWNT captain Carli Lloyd on still unsettled labor situation beyond 2016: "We'll have more of a clear picture once we have these couple of meetings coming up ... We'll kind of be able to gauge where we are at. We've been through this before. It always gets down to the last few months. I think we'll get there eventually."

Two and a half hours until kickoff, fans line up for the Walk of Champions in Tuscaloosa. A huge top-10 matchup between Alabama and Texas A&M will go a long way in deciding who wins the SEC West.

Miami (OH) WR makes great 1-handed catch

James Gardner submitted an early catch of the day candidate when he snared a pass with just his left hand while falling out of bounds.

Badgers reach for lead over Hawkeyes

Wisconsin's Troy Fumagalli catches the pass and stretches the ball across the goal line for a 17-yard TD. No. 10 Wisconsin leads Iowa 7-0.
