Pride the root of Europe's success

A complete unknown and a bit of a joke early on, Europe has come together and proved with its win over Sweden and a berth in the finals against Canada that it is the real thing.

Clemson was supposed to have the ACC's best offense. Most predictions pegged Florida State's five-star laden defense as the conference's best. Through three games vs. FBS competition, Clemson is 10th in the ACC in scoring and total offense, and FSU's defense is last in scoring and 11th in yards. It's a large enough sample size that it can't be attributed to just slow starts.

Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis, who was Les Miles' defensive coordinator for six seasons at LSU, told ESPN.com Monday that he sensed toward the end of his tenure that power brokers were plotting to force Miles out as head coach. "It's always sad to see a man and a coach the caliber of Les get pushed out," Chavis said. "He's a Hall of Famer and a legend in the state of Louisiana. I was blessed that he gave me an opportunity to coach at a place like LSU, but I can't say I'm surprised that he's gone. They were trying to fire him when I was there, and I told him so." Chavis saw a similar situation unfold at Tennessee when future Hall of Famer Phillip Fulmer was fired in 2008. Chavis, one of the most respected defensive coordinators in the college game, left LSU for Texas A&M following the 2013 season. He said his issues were never with Miles, but that he didn't trust the LSU administration.

An Arnold Palmer memory among many: after Tiger Woods won the 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational, he was in the Bay Hill locker room celebrating with caddie Joe LaCava. Palmer was on the other side of the room, bellowing with glee with an off-color mocking of Woods' decision to lay up on the 18th hole. It didn't matter to Arnie that it was the smart play, he was letting Woods have it. And Tiger loved it. A classic photo from that day.

I love it when a star isn't "too cool" to still be a fan! Dabo Swinney told me a hilarious story about meeting Pitt/Dallas Cowboys legend Tony Dorsett: He was at the ACC awards dinner and sees Dorsett. Freaks. "That's TONY DORSETT. I ain't leavin' here til I meet him! "Here I'm about to accept ACC Coach of the Year and I'm all super fan over here." Suddenly, here comes Dorsett, says... "I HAVE to get a picture with you. My agent will die!" Dorsett's agent? A Clemson grad. And then this showed up in the mail.

Three red-zone INTs in a span of five attempts; had three in previous 192 attempts, dating to 2012. Eight turnovers tied for the second-most in team history, the most since 1976.
