Why Dale Jr.'s mind can't quit racing

Dale Earnhardt Jr. returns at Daytona after letting his brain heal from multiple concussions -- and after undergoing a different sort of rehabilitation for his psyche.

Denny Hamlin said it was a racing incident where he attempted to block and Brad Keselowski turned him on the final lap of the Clash at Daytona. Hamlin: "My guess is the 2 [of Keselowski] probably had a big run and I probably cut down on him more than likely. You do everything you can to try to stay in front but he had such a head of steam there was not a whole lot I could do." Keselowski: "It's unfortunate I had to make the move. I know all the other drivers are back watching and they know not to make that block on me."

Joe Maddon says he won't pitch his top 4 starters in spring games until March after the Cubs long postseason last year. No.5 type guys Mike Montgomery and Brett Anderson will get innings right away but Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks and John Lackey won't see the mound in a Cactus League game for a bit. Cubs begin playing on Feb.25.

It's going to be a long day for Dustin Johnson and everyone chasing him at the Genesis Open. Due to weather delays earlier in the event, Johnson will play 36 holes today in hopes of winning a PGA Tour event for the 10th consecutive season. If he does -- and if Jason Day finishes worse than a two-way tie for third -- Johnson will become the world's No. 1-ranked player for the first time, and the 20th different No. 1 since the ranking was introduced in 1986.

Inclement weather will force the Indians to conduct the majority of their first full workout indoors today. Get this -- the high in Cleveland on Saturday was 69 degrees. Here in Goodyear, Arizona, the high was 57 degrees.

At first glance, the Cardinals seem crazy to call third base an open competition. One of the players vying for the spot, Jedd Gyorko, led the team with 30 home runs. The other, Jhonny Peralta, is 34 and had a negative WAR (-0.4) in 2016. But the Cardinals think Peralta's down year was largely a product of a torn thumb ligament in spring training. They saw it play out with Yadier Molina, who struggled in the first half and batted .365 after the All-Star break. "It seems the more repetitions they get or just time they get the strength back to where they look like themselves," manager Mike Matheny said. "They get that bat speed back and the power."

NASCAR is drying the Daytona International Speedway surface this morning for the rescheduled exhibition Clash, set for an 11:35 a.m. Eastern green flag today. Rain forced the postponement of the event Saturday night. Daytona 500 pole qualifying is set for 3:10 this afternoon.

When a player goes to another team before championship rings are presented, different teams handle this in different ways. Some teams mail the ring, some send an envoy. Cardinals center fielder Dexter Fowler hopes he gets his ring when the Cubs host the Cards at Wrigley Field, June 2-4. "Hopefully, it's not the whole [Kevin] Durant thing, he said Saturday, referring to how the former OKC player was booed upon his return. "But I don't think it will be. Everybody is still thanking me, and they're still pretty happy."
