The Panthers are bringing three-time Pro Bowl free safety Donte Whitner in for a workout on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported. The 31-year-old could be a big addition to a young secondary. Bringing him in also could mean the Panthers aren't convinced Tre Boston is ready to take over the job. Injuries at safety also could be an issue. Trenton Robinson suffered a shoulder injury in last week's preseason game at Tennessee after having a good camp. Whitner was released by Cleveland in April in part of a roster overhaul.

USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin on the depth difference with this year's offense as opposed to recent versions: "At times when you're not deep, the defense can see what you're capable of doing in the first drive, like, 'OK, that's it.' Now, when you're rolling in backups and guys are staying fresh, that's the best part I'm feeling. When the [backups] go in, it's like a different speed and different strengths because they're fresh. In the past, we had players that had to get every rep in practice and every rep in games."
