The Saints finally stopped the Falcons' momentum with a 57-yard field goal by Wil Lutz as time expired in the first half – but it's been a pretty rough night otherwise as they trail the Falcons 28-17. Stunningly, Atlanta WR Julio Jones doesn't have a catch yet, but the Falcons have still churned out 216 yards. And they drew a very costly 25-yard PI flag against Saints rookie CB Ken Crawley on third down to keep a 94-yard TD drive alive in the final two minutes.

Drew Brees averaged 4.7 yards per pass attempt in the first half. That is his fifth-lowest average in a first half over the past five seasons (2012-16). The Saints lost the other four games and trail this one, 28-17.

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Julio Jones without a catch on four targets but Falcons still lead Saints 28-17 at halftime. Matt Ryan found Justin Hardy for touchdown that was confirmed after review. Falcons getting production all around. Tevin Coleman with two touchdown runs and Devonta Freeman with a touchdown catch. Only helps in the long run when Falcons can get it done without Julio.

The Nationals are falling apart. With Stephen Strasburg (elbow), Daniel Murphy (buttocks), and Bryce Harper (thumb) already ailing, now they have to worry about Wilson Ramos. The All-Star catcher exited in the sixth inning when he landed awkwardly after trying to catch a high throw home. Before walking off the field very gingerly, he was on the ground for several minutes, grimacing in pain and clutching his right knee.

Another TD run for Tevin Coleman on the inside zone scheme. With the outside linebacker left unblocked -- and slow to close to the ball -- Coleman can bend the run back to space. It's now a 21-14 Falcons lead over the Saints.

Tevin Coleman with his second TD on a 2-yard run. This two-back system with Devonta Freeman working to perfection. All three scores by the backs. Falcons lead 21-14.

With six scoreless innings in the books after getting out of a bases loaded jam Kyle Hendricks is the only qualified pitcher with a sub 2.00 era as it dropped to 1.99. The Cubs lead the Pirates 11-0.

So Falcons get bitten after penalty on special teams. Justin Hardy roughing kicker gives Drew Brees ball back to drive 75 yards for a touchdown. Can't give Brees another chance like that. Tied at 14 now

Excellent play call from the Falcons on Matt Ryan's TD pass to Devonta Freeman. That was basically a swing screen to beat man-coverage with the Falcons running Julio Jones underneath on the crossing route (removes the CB in coverage) and the tackle pulling out to block the linebacker. Easy toss for Ryan and a walk-in TD for Freeman.

Devonta Freeman scores first TD of season

Freeman, who scored 14 TDs last season, found the end zone for the first time this year on a 13-yard TD catch from Matt Ryan to put the Falcons up 14-7 on the Saints. (Live on ESPN)

Javier Baez has a career high 6 RBIs as the Cubs have opened up an 11-0 lead on the Pirates. They're 12 outs away from win No. 100.

Devonta Freeman scores his first touchdown of the season on a 13-yard pass from Matt Ryan. Freeman tied for the league league with 14 total touchdowns last season. 14-7 Falcons to start second quarter.

Interesting decision by Terry Francona to remove Corey Kluber after four innings with a 4-2 lead. Kluber had thrown 60 pitches, so apparently the Indians had a strict limit, preserving a few pitches down the stretch so Kluber is as ready as possible for Game 1 of the Division Series next week. Francona still has the AL's best bullpen to turn to as the Indians try to clinch the AL Central with a win.

Falcons Tevin Coleman was helped off the field after that horse collar tackle call. Grabbed his foot. More Devonta Freeman now.

Kris Bryant reached 100 RBIs on the season for the first time in his career on his 39th home run of the season on Monday night against the Pirates. The Cubs are well on their way to their 100th win as they lead 7-0.

Saints muff punt in bizarre sequence
NFL

Saints return man Tommylee Lewis collides with teammate De'Vante Harris, which contributes to a fumble and an eventual Atlanta recovery. The Falcons scored a TD on the ensuing next drive to tie the score at 7.

Huge special teams blunder by Saints -- fumbling the punt return after a three-and-out by the defense. Rookie CB De'Vante Harris ran into return man Tommylee Lewis while blocking. Then Harris made things worse by trying to scoop up the ball and fumbling. The game now tied 7-7 after Falcons scored three plays later... Pretty much the exact opposite of the huge Steve Gleason punt block vs. Falcons in a similar situation 10 years ago.

Falcons RB Tevin Coleman can really accelerate. That showed up on the swing pass and the TD run. An inside zone scheme for six points. Coleman can get vertical quickly. It's a now a 7-7 game in the first quarter.

NFL

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Tevin Coleman with his second touchdown run in as many weeks to help the Falcons tie the Saints 7-7 after a fumble recovery by the Falcons on a punt return. Coleman getting more scoring opportunities while sharing carries with Devonta Freeman. The two were on the field together for one play on the 11-yard drive.

NFL

The Saints put together a smart and efficient opening drive to take a 7-0 lead over the Falcons. With multiple personnel groupings and balanced calls, the Saints controlled the line of scrimmage. And Sean Payton went to the gadget call early on the flea-flicker for an explosive play.

NFL

Mike Sando ESPN Senior Writer

Nice run call by the Saints on second-and-5. New Orleans had passed a league-high 61.9 percent of the time on second-and-5 during the Sean Payton era (since 2006).

Steve Gleason the honorary captain for coin toss before Saints-Falcons – on the 10-year anniversary of his unforgettable blocked punt the night the Superdome reopened after Hurricane Katrina on Monday Night Football against the Falcons. And quarterback Drew Brees leads the crowd in the "Who Dat" chant before kickoff.

NFL

Powerful display of unity between the rival Saints and Falcons after the national anthem – the two teams joining hands in a wide circle around the field. Saints RB Mark Ingram said he and other players wanted to do something in the wake of more police shootings in Tulsa and Charlotte and support the cause of growing protestors around the NFL. But they wanted it to be a sign of unity and not take be something of division or controversy.

NFL

Javier Baez just hit a grand slam for the Cubs in the fourth inning squarely putting the team's 100th victory in sight as they lead the Pirates 5-0 behind MLB ERA leader Kyle Hendricks.
