Vontaze Burfict is a villain I'd love to play with

NFL defenses thrive off physicality and intimidation. So when Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict returns to the field on Thursday night, he'll have a palpable effect on his teammates, writes Matt Bowen.

I've confirmed the Bengals' plan for tonight has not changed. LB Vontaze Burfict and LB Vinny Rey will each have radio transmitters in their helmets, which means they can't be on the field together. Burfict will play primarily on early downs. Burfict hasn't played in a game since January and told me he asked the coaches if he could wait a week before wearing the radio because he's worried about catching his breath while trying to make a play call. The coaches apparently said no.

Beautiful night in Cincinnati. There may be a few scattered showers during the game, but no wind and a kick off temperature around 60 degrees.

Judging by the sheer number of David Ortiz jerseys outside Yankee Stadium tonight -- including fans wearing both Yankees AND Red Sox apparel, Big Papi probably can expect a warm reception on the occasion of his final game in the Bronx. We asked a few fans -- those wearing Yankees gear only for this exercise -- whether they plan to cheer or boo him and why. Believe it or not, despite the bitter rivalry, almost all the answers we got were family friendly.

The Broncos receivers like what they've seen from quarterback Trevor Siemian this week as he is coming off a 312-yard, four-touchdown day last Sunday in the win over the Bengals. Here's what Emmanuel Sanders had to say after today's practice: "Tell you what, today was one of the best practices I've seen him have, you know, in terms of the ball when it was coming how it was spinning, how accurate he was and the height of the ball. He's getting better and better … Maybe he's sitting at home watching SportsCenter, seeing his name and his jersey sales going up. And that's all right.''

Watch Joe Maddon discuss his plans for this weekend. Relievers will be "choreographed" while his regulars will play but bench guys are still going to get some at bats.

Just talked to Dolphins WR DeVante Parker who said he will play tonight. He's listed as questionable with a hamstring injury.

Statement from Josh Gordon "After careful thought and deep consideration I've decided that I need to step away from pursuing my return to the Browns and my football career to enter an in-patient rehabilitation facility. This is the right decision for me and one that I hope will enable me to gain full control of my life and continue on a path to reach my full potential as a person. I appreciate the support of the NFL, NFLPA, the Browns, my teammates, my agent and the community through this extremely challenging process." Statement from Executive VP of Football Operations Sashi Brown on Josh Gordon "We support Josh in taking this step to seek additional help and treatment. His singular focus must be on his own health. We want nothing more than for Josh to be successful personally and professionally and will not comment on his status with the organization at this time."

The Chiefs practiced today without either of their starting cornerbacks, Marcus Peters and Phillip Gaines. Peters missed practice for the second straight day because of the flu while Gaines has a sore knee. Also, running back Jamaal Charles was again listed on the injury report as a limited practice participant.

Ran into these three guys -- Joey Burton, Brad Glogowski and Shea Connolly -- this afternoon at the Ryder Cup. Why did they decide to wear the ugliest shirts in the history of the Ryder Cup? Because they are the uniforms from the 1999 matches where the Americans made their largest comeback in Cup history. A little karma from that epic rally at Brookline couldn't hurt, right?

Bob Holtzman ESPN

Just to be clear, Bengals TE Tyler Eifert will not play tonight. If you optimistically put him into your fantasy line up, get him out.

David Ortiz likely will get two at-bats tonight, per Red Sox manager John Farrell, who said Big Papi felt "obligation" to play in final game at Yankee Stadium . But Ortiz's at-bats aren't expected to be dialed back at all over the weekend at Fenway Park.

Keep an eye on Miami's play calling tonight. The Dolphins are among the NFL's worst on third down and Adam Gase told me, "when you're bad on third down, the way to fix that is not to get in third down". To me that sounds like code for more aggressive play calling on early downs.
