Casting my 2018 Hall of Fame ballot ... today

With so many worthy candidates, thank goodness voters have a whole year to ponder their picks, right? Well, except one writer, who has been tasked with ticking his 10 boxes a tad early.

As for Davante Adams (ankle) and Geronimo Allison (hamstring), Packers coach Mike McCarthy said: "Don't really have enough information right now. Obviously Davante's injury happened Sunday, and Geronimo's. We're going to give them the whole week. I'm not really concerned today. We'll hopefully have a better gauge if we think these guys are going to make it."

Falcons WR Julio Jones said he is "fine" and that he left last Saturday's game early because the game was pretty much won and he wanted to get "ahead of the curve" with ice and treatment on his toe injury. "I got a little snag and we thought, let's go check it out," Jones said. Jones said he has been dealing with the injury for weeks and "it works for us to be limited in practice and play Sunday."

Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan named PFWA assistant coach of the year after leading Atlanta to highest scoring offense in the league. Shanahan, of course, is expected to be the 49ers next head coach though nothing can be made official until after Atlanta's season is complete.

Green Bay executive Eliot Wolf has pulled out of the 49ers search for a new general manager. The Niners still plan a second round of interviews which will almost certainly include presumptive favorite Brian Gutekunst, also from Green Bay. Minnesota's George Paton and possibly Arizona's Terry McDonough also remain the mix. USA Today first reported that Wolf withdrew from consideration and signed a new deal with the Packers.

The Cincinnati Reds have made a tremendous lopsided deal acquiring top pitching prospect Luis Castillo, legitimate bullpen arm in Austin Brice and an athletic OF prospect in Isaiah White. They sell high on Dan Straily, who's coming off his career best season but his peripherals say he won't repeat it. A back of rotation type starter. Castillo straight up for Straily would have been a win for the Reds. Great job of grinding by Reds GM Dick Williams on this one.

How amazing is Denis Istomin's five-set upset of defending champ Novak Djokovic in the second round of the Australian Open? Djokovic was going for a record seventh title. He had won 40 of his last 41 matches here. Istomin, who is ranked 117th, didn't win a single match on the ATP Tour last year. Djokovic was 5-0 against him before this match and lost only one set. The world No. 2 congratulated Istomin afterward for "playing amazing. He deserved to win. He was the better player in clutch moments....Many things came together for him today."
