Heisman Watch: The Sooners' main cog
By Mike Diegnan

1. Eric Crouch, Nebraska QB
at Texas Tech: 6-12-86, 2 TD, 1 int.; rush: 12-52, 1 TD
Season: 45-90-752, 10 TD, 5 int.; rush: 91-530, 9 TD
This week: Baylor
Comment: Tough to displace the MVP of the nation's top team. Oklahoma's D has two weeks to prepare for him.

Woodrow Dantzler
Woodrow Dantzler is a complete offensive weapon.
2. Woody Dantzler, Clemson QB
Maryland: 10-19-186, 1 int.; rush: 17-87, 2 TD
Season: 91-147-1271, 8 TD, 4 int.; rush: 122-819, 12 TD
This week: at North Carolina
Comment: His current pace: 1997 passing yards, 1287 rushing yards. He'll be tough to pass up if he sets the 2,000-1,000 record, but he also has to beat FSU later this year too.

3. Michael Vick, Virginia Tech QB
West Virginia: 10-18-233, 2 TD; rush: 11-57
Season: 65-107-868, 7 TD, 4 int.; rush: 70-541, 7 TD
This week: at Syracuse
Comment: Vick is the people's choice for the award because of his highlight plays, but his numbers just don't match those of Dantzler and Crouch. Plus, his team is much better than others think.

4. LaDainian Tomlinson, TCU RB
Last week: Off
Season: 168-974, 10 TD
This week: at Tulsa
Comment: LT had his final bye week. Now it's time for the Horned Frogs' star to put up the big numbers.

Drew Brees
Quarterback Drew Brees led Purdue to the Rose Bowl last season.
5. Drew Brees, Purdue QB
at Northwestern: 22-40-239, 5 TD, 1 int.; rush: 16-56
Season: 180-293-2169, 17 TD, 4 int.; rush: 63-349, 3 TD; rec: 1-5, 1 TD
This week: at Wisconsin
Comment: Brees' run for the Heisman is looking more and more like Ron Dayne's last year. If he takes Purdue to the Rose Bowl, he probably wins it.

6. Chris Weinke, Florida St. QB
Duke: 37-47-536, 5 TD, 1 int.
Season: 164-256-2510, 20 TD, 6 int.
This week: Virginia
Comment: It's amazing what he can do when his ankle isn't bothering him.

7. Josh Heupel, Oklahoma QB
at Kansas State: 29-37-374, 2 TD; rush 9-(-35), 1 TD
Season: 144-210-1894, 11 TD, 4 int.; rush: 33-26, 5 TD
This week: Off
Comment: Heupel deserves a week off after his performance against K-State. Not only were his numbers impressive, but he did it while taking numerous licks and withstood a fierce Wildcats rally.

8. Damien Anderson, Northwestern RB
Purdue: 17-55, 1 TD
Season: 158-1105, 14 TD
This week: Off
Comment: Anderson was finally shut down by Purdue. The Wildcats are still one of the feel-good stories of the season.

9. Marques Tuiasosopo, Wash. QB
at Arizona State: 13-30-110, 1 TD, 1 int.; rush: 12-24
Season: 98-180-1680, 12 TD, 5 int.; rush: 84-288, 14 TD
This week: California
Comment: Tui still has the Huskies in the Pac-10 race.

10. Anthony Thomas, Mich. RB
Indiana: 15-95, 3 TD
Season: 161-946, 10 TD
This week: Michigan State
Comment: The Wolverines steamrolled Indiana and there was little need for the A-Train.

Jonathan Beasley, Kansas State QB
Oklahoma: 14-36-211, 1 TD, 2 int.; rush: 15-39, 2 TD
Season: 85-150-1570, 11 TD, 4 int.; rush: 72-264, 14 TD
This week: Texas Tech
Comment: I guess K-State fans are going to be quiet now ? until November at least. Of course, it would help if his receivers didn't drop so many balls against the Sooners.
