The right call was made

INDIANAPOLIS -- The result is correct. There is no doubt about it.

As we saw on television, the crash had occurred before Paul Tracy made his move to pass Helio Castroneves. We showed on another film clip that the yellow light in the cars was already on before Tracy made his move around Castroneves.

In Indy Cars, the rule is that when the yellow light goes on, racing stops and drivers cannot improve their position. NASCAR is different, where they will race back to the line to complete that lap after a yellow caution comes out. Indy's way is the safest way to conduct a motor race because if the cars were to race back to the start/finish line, they could become involved in the accident or cause another accident on the track.

In this case, the yellow light was already on around the circuit and in the cars before Tracy started to make his move. So the call is correct.

Even though the race finished under yellow, it was still a great race. It was unfortunate that there was an accident within a few laps towards the end of the race, but it was still one of the most exciting races we've seen in a long time.

We'll leave Indianapolis never knowing who would have won if there wasn't a crash as Tracy was preparing to pass Castroneves just as the yellow was coming out. If Tracy did pass Castroneves, it would have set up an excellent two-lap run to the end, only if Castroneves had enough fuel.  HELP |  ADVERTISER INFO |  CONTACT US |  TOOLS |  SITE MAP
