ABC Sports Online

Notes from the 1990 MNF season:

  • Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced the 16-game season would be played over 17 weeks in 1990 and '91, and over 18 weeks in 1992 and '93.

  • The playoff format was expanded from eight to 12 teams, as two more wild card teams were added to each conference.

  • The Dec. 3 matchup between the 49ers and the Giants earned a 26.9 rating, 46 percent share, becoming the second-highest rated Monday Night game ever. It was also the lowest-scoring game in the program's history (7-3) -- a distinction still held today.
