Swann to head President's Council on Physical Fitness

Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann, a fixture on ABC Sports' on-air team since 1976, will serve as Chairman of President George W. Bush's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the President announced late last week. The Council is part of Bush's HealthierUS initiative, which urges Americans to make healthier choices in their lives by becoming physically fit.

"I am truly flattered that President Bush chose me to serve as Chairman of his Council on Physical Fitness and Sports," said Swann, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2001. "The President's HealthierUS initiative is an outstanding way to encourage Americans to live healthier lives, and I am honored to have been given the opportunity to play a key role in this program."

The HealthierUS initiative, outlined last Thursday in a 16-page booklet, calls for at least a half-hour of exercise every day for adults and more for children. In addition, Americans are encouraged to eat smaller portions, eat more nutritious foods, get regular preventative health screenings and avoid risky behaviors.

Swann, a member of all four Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Championship teams and the MVP of Super Bowl X, is ABC's top college football sideline reporter. He has also covered the NFL, USFL, 1984 Summer Olympics, 1988 Winter Olympics, and various "Wide World of Sports" events during his two-and-a-half decades with the network. Swann is the only commentator who has worked ABC's coverage of all four BCS National Championship Games.

Swann was the Steelers' first-round draft choice in 1974 following his graduation from the University of Southern California, where he received a degree in public relations and was a unanimous All-American choice in his senior year.

He is on the National Board of Directors and a spokesman for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America (since 1980). He has created a youth scholarship program for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater school.

Swann has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, both on and off the field. In 1993 he was inducted into the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame, the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame, and was named the Best Athlete of All Time in San Mateo County, California. In 1997, Swann was the recipient of the Walter Camp Football Foundation Man of the Year Award. In 1999 he received the National Collegiate Athletic Association Silver Anniversary Award and in 2000, he was awarded the Pop Warner Little Scholars Tomlin Award and the Pittsburgh YMCA Man of the Year Award.  HELP |  ADVERTISER INFO |  CONTACT US |  TOOLS |  SITE MAP
