Women of Wide World: Olga Korbut

Perhaps no other gymnast ever did more to promote participation in the sport of gymnastics than Olga Korbut. Her radiant smile and personality illuminated the world to the joys of gymnastics. Olga won the hearts of millions of viewers as she took part in competitions and exhibitions throughout the world. Her appearances were packed to capacity and brought thousands of little girls into the sport.

Olga Korbut of the Soviet Union won five medals at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.
The 17-year-old Korbut won three gold and two silver medals at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. In addition to her team gold, Korbut was the Olympic champion in beam and floor exercise. She won another team gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

But it was in March 1973 when Olga became a truly world wide star when the U.S.S.R. Gymnastics Team visited Madison Square Garden, which was televised on ABC's Wide World of Sports.

In 1977, Olga made her final appearance on Wide World when the U.S.S.R. team visited South Bend, Ind.

She became the first inductee into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
