MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports announced that Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, will become the 11th stop on the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. It will be the first time in 40 years that a National has taken place in Utah. The Monster Energy Supercross championship has also had an event in Salt Lake City off and on since 2001 and will do so in April 2013.
MMP was conceived by the late Larry H. Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz and opened in 2005. It features a 4.5-mile road course that can be cut into east and west tracks, a karting track, rock crawling course and an off-road truck course. It has played host to NASCAR events, World Superbike, AMA Superbike, the American Le Mans Series and more.
For the AMA MX series, the promoter will construct a permanent purpose-built, national-caliber motocross circuit in the infield of the east section of the road course to serve as host for the Utah National. The ability to use the paddock garages, grandstands and suites at Miller Motorsports Park will be a first for Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. The races will take place Saturday, Aug. 17.
John Gardner, MMP's marketing and communications manager, said the official groundbreaking of the motocross course will take place Tuesday. He said the original track for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series [trucks] was originally in the same infield area before its own permanent 22-acre facility was built.
"We do things quickly here and we ask that people give us a shot," Gander said. "We built the off-road truck course in 45 days and we built the original facility here in a year. We are going to exceed expectations."
Gardner said MMP originally pitched the idea of having a motocross national to MX Sports a couple of years ago. "Off-road motorsports are very popular in Utah and motocross has been something we've been after for a while."
The state of Utah has also been a big proponent of motorcycle sports. Former two-term Utah Gov., U.S. ambassador to China and early 2012 Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman is a motorcyclist and off-road rider and has shown up at many Supercross and Arenacross races over the years to spectate and advocate for motorcycling.
"The Utah National is going to be a milestone event for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship," said Davey Coombs, President of MX Sports Pro Racing. "It is a different sort of venue than we are accustomed to visiting, but it is ideal in light of the rapid growth our series is enjoying."
Tooele is 32 miles from downtown Salt Lake City and 30 miles from the international airport.
