Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (April 3, 2009) The groundbreaking surf film, Out of my Head, starring Peruvian surfer Gabriel Villaran premieres today, Friday, April 3rd during the Quiksilver ISA World Juniors being held in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The film, produced by Quiksilver, showcases the best Latin American breaks and surf talent, including Gabriel, Sofia Mulanovich and 15 year old charger Cristobal de Col (competing in the ISA World Juniors Boys Under 16 category).
"Out of my Head is more than just my surfing, it tells about the highs and lows in my life and has allowed me to bring together some of the surfers I find most inspiring today," says Gabriel Villaran. "By sharing this film with the next generation of Latin American chargers at the ISA World Juniors, hopefully we can show them what's possible and give them the inspiration to take surfing to an even higher level in the future."
The film highlights the best waves in Peru and Chile along with standout spots around the world. Explore these often-remote locations with the surfers who know how to ride them best. Along with surf action learn about Gabriel's lows, and how he uses moments of struggle to strive for bigger goals and make a difference in others' lives.
Gabriel, the current Peruvian National Champion, is pushing the global surf scene with a fluid mix of big wave prowess, progressive aerials and photogenic style. He proved himself on the world stage taking 4th place at Pipeline among a crowd of local Hawaiian knowledge. Sofia takes a supporting role in the film, both as one of Peru's surf icons and as a lifelong friend of Gabriel's. Learn how the two pushed each other as kids right into the global surf stage's spotlight, while watching her destroy the waves she knows best.
Catch the premiere in Guayaquil, Ecuador following the day's competition. Gabriel will be at the event for a signing and will field questions about the project. Check out a quick glimpse at:
Following the premiere, Gabriel packs his bags for a filming trip that spans Ecuador to Chile. At the end of the month, the Peruvian's focus turns to the WQS with 6-star stops at the Quiksilver Pro in South Africa and the 6.0 Lower's Pro in California. Look for Gabriel deep in Teahupoo's big barrels as he looks to grab a wildcard spot at the Billabong Pro this May.
