Wiggolly Dantas won the Soorus Lacanau Pro in France Sunday, beating out fellow Brazilian Alejo Muniz in the final. The contest saw near-perfect conditions, with four-to-five foot surf and a huge crowd of spectators lining the beach. This is Dantas' second ASP Star event win and it improves his position on the ASP World Ranking to 17. Beginning next year, the World Ranking will determine surfers for the World Tour.
"It's so amazing right now to surf against one of my best friends in the final and to win the contest. I just went out there to surf my heat and do my best, and it worked out. I'm really stoked now," Dantas told the ASP after beating Muniz with a combined score of 14.23.
Muniz pulled impressive airs throughout the contest but wasn't able to best Dantas, who surfed with style and consistently throughout the contest.
"It was so hard out there and the waves were not coming to me. I tried to do my best but Wiggolly won in the end and I'm happy for him," said Muniz.
Richard Christie of New Zealand was beat in the semifinal by Dantas, despite nabbing an 8.27 in the closing minutes of their heat.
"It is a good result for me and unfortunately I only got one good scoring wave in that heat but anyway Wiggolly deserved the win as he surfed really well that heat," Christie said.
The Men's 6-Star series heads to Spain next week for the Ferrolterra Movistar Pantin Classic by Billabong.
