Riko Smalls won't be part of Virginia's crowded competition at quarterback, as the rising sophomore has left the team and will transfer following the current academic term.
Virginia head coach Mike London made the announcement Monday, saying in a news release, "Riko and I have decided that it is in his best interests to seek an opportunity that will allow him greater success in college."
Smalls redshirted in 2008 and didn't play at all last season, though he rose to No. 2 on the depth chart while Marc Verica dealt with a concussion. The 6-foot, 200-pound Smalls hasn't been participating in spring practice, which kicked off March 15.
Virginia has plenty of options at quarterback, led by Verica, who appeared in six games last fall. The Cavaliers signed four quarterbacks in February, including Michael Strauss, who is already on campus.
