Something will change today at North Carolina's football practice -- one quarterback will get more reps with the first team than another.
It will be the first time since coach Butch Davis opened up the starting position following their 17-15 loss to Maryland that Cam Sexton and T.J. Yates won't split the reps evenly. Still, Davis said he doesn't plan on publicly naming his starter until Saturday's game against NC State.
Davis wouldn't say which quarterback would get the most reps today, but he's not doing it because he thinks it might be an advantage to NC State.
"There's no ulterior motive for naming it, not naming it," Davis said. "We just don't need the added distractions."
Sexton took over for the injured Yates and won Sept. 27 at Miami in his first start of the season. The Tar Heels are 5-2 with him as their starter, but after Sexton completed 10 of 24 passes for 166 yards and the offense stalled against Maryland, Davis re-opened the competition.
"If this was week two, three, four of the season and neither of these guys had any previous starting experience you certainly would be a little bit more concerned," Davis said. "But this late in the season, both of them have had significant starting experience in the last 18 months, so it's not that big of a concern."
