ACC's Top 25 player countdown: No. 18

No 18. Donovan Varner, WR, Duke

2009 numbers: He led the ACC in receptions per game (5.42), overall receptions (65) and yards per game (87.2). He finished with 1,047 receiving yards and averaged 16.1 yards per catch.

Most recent ranking: Not ranked.

Making the case for Varner: It’s been 21 years since Duke had a receiver with 1,000 yards in a single season, and Varner is only entering his junior season. You can't leave the ACC's top receiver from 2009 off this list. He had more than 100 yards receiving each against NC State, Maryland, Virginia and Miami. If Varner and quarterback Sean Renfree can find a rhythm this fall, there’s no reason Varner shouldn’t repeat as a first-team all-conference selection.
