Redshirt freshman Dean Haynes is listed as the starter at halfback on N.C. State's depth chart for the Western Carolina game.
This is news because A) Until two weeks ago, Haynes was a safety and B) Because the most experienced players -- Curtis Underwood and James Washington -- are nowhere on the two-deep.
Coach Tom O'Brien was not available for comment about the depth chart, which was released today, and I'm not going to assume anything on this one. True freshman Mustafa Greene is listed as the No. 2 halfback.
Haynes was a quarterback and running back during his senior year at Northwest Whitfield County High School (Ga.), so it's not like he hasn't played the position before. He had 878 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns that season. Still, starting the season with two running backs who haven't taken a collegiate snap obviously isn't ideal.
