Miami has canceled all football activities Monday afternoon after learning the mother of running back Mike James passed away in a car accident this morning, according to a release from the school.
“He is a member of our family,” interim head coach Jeff Stoutland said in the statement. “He grieves and we grieve. He hurts and we hurt. We are all here to support Mike and his family in any way possible.”
James’ sister and nephew were also involved in the accident and are currently hospitalized. The sophomore has left campus to be with his family.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike and his family,” athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in the statement. “Family is the foundation of our football program, and today the entire Hurricane family is grieving with Mike. “
James is averaging 5.8 yards per carry and has three touchdowns for the Hurricanes this season.
