North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner is the expected starter and had a good spring, but the Tar Heels came out of spring ball without a clear-cut backup for him. True freshman Marquise Williams competed with Braden Hanson and A.J. Blue, who was injured two years ago and redshirted last season.
Davis said Williams has the size and the arm strength, but is also in the midst of a major learning curve.
"His head's spinning," Davis said. "He didn't know there were that many football plays in America, much less one team. But he'll sort it out."
Davis said he loved the approach of offensive coordinator John Shoop, who threw everything at the young quarterback this spring to "see what sticks." He also said Hansen was "probably one of the most improved players on our team," and that Blue is athletic with a good arm, but none of them have the experience -- including Renner.
Davis said he won't know who will redshirt until a week to 10 days before the start of the season, so Williams still has a lot of time to catch up in the quarterback race.
