Tall task for Virginia Tech

This ACC team hasn't won it's season opener since 2007.

This ACC team hasn't been undefeated entering October since 2005.

This is the ACC's best team??

As good as Virginia Tech has been since joining the ACC -- and that's really good -- the Hokies have just been miserable in the month of September.

Virginia Tech managed to cruise through its 2010 ACC schedule undefeated, but the program has yet to make it to October undefeated since 2005. Granted, the Hokies haven't exactly been lining up Arkansas State every year, but you'd think a program with the longest active streak of 10-win seasons has had a little more success in September.

There's no question this year's schedule is conducive to reversing that trend: Appalachian State, at East Carolina, Arkansas State, at Marshall. But at some point, Virginia Tech has to open AND close the season in stronger fashion in order to take the next step on the national level.

You've heard the coachspeak, "It's not how you start, it's how you finish?"

For these Hokies, it's both.
