The University of Maryland has created a new sports journalism program and named it for former Washington Post sportswriter Shirley Povich.
The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism will be part of the school's Philip Merrill College of Journalism. I know, I know, you guys think I should go back and learn a thing or two about sports writing. Well if I ever do go back, this sounds like a great program. It's refreshing to see a university dedicated to sports journalism. The business has changed immensely in recent years. Twitter alone has changed how news is reported. So, too, have blogs. It's good to see Maryland keeping up -- even if it is off the field.
