Inside the numbers: Florida State vs. Miami

ESPN Stats & Information also previewed the Florida State-Miami game in Tallahassee on Saturday. Here's a look inside the numbers:

Harris protecting the football

After throwing two interceptions on passes of 15-plus yards in his first game this season against Ohio State, Miami quarterback Jacory Harris has not thrown an interception on a deep passes since -- a span of seven games. Harris is taking fewer chances downfield this season, but scoring a higher rate.

Note: Harris has thrown four interceptions in 195 attempts this season (2.1 percent). That is down from 5.6 percent last season, which was the second-highest percentage amongst AQ quarterbacks. The key difference is that Harris is throwing a higher percentage of his passes within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage (66.3 percent in 2011 compared to 49.1 percent the past two seasons) resulting in fewer interceptions downfield (Harris had 24 interceptions on throws of 10-plus yards in 2009 and 2010).

Miller stacks up with the best

Miami running back Lamar Miller has rushed for 1,016 yards this season with eight touchdowns. Miller has gone over 100 yards in six games this season and he stacks up with the nation’s best running inside the tackles.

Miller gets stronger in second half

Despite having just one more second-half carry this season, Miller has gained 148 more yards in the second half of games than he has in the first. Miller has been especially efficient in the second half when Miami is trailing, gaining 325 yards and averaging 8.6 yards per rush.

Manuel makes plays versus blitz

Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel has been efficient against the blitz, but has struggled when opponents drop back into coverage. Seven of his eight interceptions have come against four or fewer pass rushers, including all four of his interceptions versus Oklahoma and Wake Forest.

Florida State pushes teams backwards

Florida State has forced a loss on 84 of its opponents’ plays this season, the most in the ACC and third in FBS. The Seminoles have forced their opponents into at least 10 negative plays in four games this season, but have not done so in their last four games.
