There have been several recent coaching hires throughout the country, but Brian Fremeau of Football Outsiders writes that North Carolina's hire of Larry Fedora is one of three that could have the most sudden impact. This is Insider content, but here is an excerpt from Fremeau on Fedora:
Recruiting the personnel needed on both sides of the ball to address those deficiencies might take time, but Fedora can make an immediate impact for North Carolina on special teams. Southern Miss ranked in the top 10 in special-teams efficiency (STE is a combination of punting, kicking and returning) in 2010 and '11, while North Carolina struggled woefully in that category. The difference between the two units amounted to nearly 40 points in scoreboard value on the year, and an average special-teams performance would have earned the Tar Heels a victory against the Virginia Tech Hokies late in the year.
