The defensive troubles were obvious. ESPN.com's Stats & Information department took a closer look at the Tigers' offensive struggles against West Virginia in Wednesday night's 70-33 loss in the Discover Orange Bowl:
Throughout the 2011 season, quarterback Tajh Boyd struggled on throws of 10 or more yards in Clemson’s losses. Entering Wednesday's game, Boyd was completing 53.0 percent of such throws on the season, but only 44.7 in their three losses.
On Wednesday night, West Virginia brought four or fewer pass-rushers on 93.5 percent of Boyd’s pass attempts. Boyd was unable to duplicate the success he enjoyed this season against a minimal pass rush, completing just 53.5 percent of his passes.
