Syracuse to join ACC in July 2013

As expected, Syracuse will leave the Big East early and join the ACC as of July 1, 2013, both conferences confirmed today.

“The ACC looks forward to the arrival of Syracuse as a playing member on July 1, 2013," ACC commissioner John Swofford said in a prepared statement. "Syracuse will be an outstanding addition to the ACC. We’ve been preparing to welcome them into our membership and I’m pleased that Syracuse and the Big East were able to come to an agreement. As a league, we continue to be excited about our future.”

Syracuse will pay a $7.5 million exit fee to leave before the 27 months required under Big East bylaws.

This shouldn't come as a big surprise after West Virginia found a way out of the Big East in time to join the Big 12 for this season. This appeared to be a much smoother departure. Precedent has been set, so it would make sense for Pitt to follow in time for the 2013 season. This is more good news for the ACC moving forward.
