My player to watch in Week 3 is Virginia linebacker Steve Greer.
The Hoos are playing at Georgia Tech on Saturday in a huge Coastal Division game. If you remember back to last season, Virginia was able to slow down the Georgia Tech ground game enough to win, 24-21, holding the Jackets to under 300 total yards. Greer played a huge role in that game, recording 10 tackles.
He goes into this game off one of the better performances of his career, with 15 tackles against Penn State, and two sacks. Entering Week 3, Greer leads the team in total tackles (19), tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (two). In fact, he is the only player on the defense who has recorded a sack.
Virginia is going to need another big game from him again if it has any hopes of beating the Yellow Jackets.
Greer said this week: "It’s going to be kinda an us against you mentality where we kinda know what they’re going to do and they’re going to have a good idea of what we’re going to do, so its going to just have to be guys beating blocks and making plays, and I think that’s the mentality of our defense."
Coach Mike London pointed to the Georgia Tech dive play in particular as one the Hoos had great success in stopping last season.
"All you do defensively is try to make sure you take care of the necessities of the triple option, that's the dive, the quarterback and the pitch," London said. "You try to make it simple for your guys, and you try to do maybe some things that hopefully will cross up the reads of the quarterback."
