UNC keeps Virginia Tech reeling

The best team in the Coastal Division might be the ineligible one.

It certainly doesn't look like it's Virginia Tech, which has now lost back-to-back games and three of its past four. The team that was picked by the media in July to win the division is now struggling just to get to a bowl game. After weeks of opening with slow starts, it was Virginia Tech's defense that was the biggest problem in a 48-34 road loss to North Carolina.

After Bud Foster's explative-laden rant last week, you can only imagine what's going on in his head this week after watching the defense allow Giovani Bernard to run for 262 yards and 11.4 yards per carry. UNC racked up 533 total yards. North Carolina, on the other hand, finally got a strong performance against a much better opponent than the likes of Elon and Idaho. The Tar Heels' win over Virginia Tech made next weekend's game at Miami even more interesting.

Miami fans (and Duke fans for that matter) can argue that they've got the best team in the division. Maybe they do. It's still a wide-open race.

Virginia Tech fans, meanwhile, should be less concerned about Charlotte and more concerned about reaching the six-win mark. With Clemson, Miami and Florida State still on the schedule, it's not going to be easy.

Nor will beating Duke next weekend at this rate.
