North Carolina backup quarterback Mike Paulus will transfer to William & Mary, a school spokesman confirmed today.
Paulus met with coach Butch Davis about a month ago, and Davis was supportive and said he would do what he could to help Paulus find another school where he could play immediately. It could just be coincidence, but UNC offensive coordinator John Shoop's brother, Bob Shoop, is the defensive coordinator at William & Mary. UNC and William & Mary will face each other next season.
Paulus will not go to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, leaving the Tar Heels with just two quarterbacks for the bowl game against Pitt -- starter T.J. Yates and backup Braden Hanson. UNC will still be in good shape at quarterback next year without Paulus, as the Heels will return Yates, Hanson, and Bryn Renner, who redshirted this year. A.J. Blue, who ran a few plays out of the wildcat formation before he was injured this year, could also help the position in 2010.
