It's a good day to be a North Carolina fan. It's bad news for opposing ACC offenses.
UNC safety Deunta Williams told ESPN's Joe Schad that he and four other key defensive underclassmen plan on returning in 2010 instead of opting to leave early for the NFL draft. Williams, Marvin Austin, Quan Sturdivant, Bruce Carter and Kendric Burney made a collective decision to come back, and that should make the Tar Heels a lock for the best defense in the ACC next year. They were already the best in the conference this season because of their continuous ability to make game-changing plays. This was a defense that could score.
Now, if North Carolina's offense can find a way to do the same, the Tar Heels could be the team to beat next year in the Coastal Division. That's a big "if," though. If there's one thing UNC learned this season, it's that it takes more than a spectacular defense to win championships.
