Vacate vs. forfeit

Posted by ESPN.com's Heather Dinich

To clarify: Florida State does not have to forfeit any wins, but they might have to vacate them. The difference is, a vacated win does not affect the opponent. So, if Florida State beat Virginia Tech and that game has to be vacated, that doesn't mean the Hokies get another win.

There are still a lot of questions that have to be answered. The biggest is, obviously, how many wins have to be vacated, and the NCAA said that has to come from Florida State. Yes, several football players already paid the price last season with their three-game suspensions and the previous year's bowl suspension, but the NCAA said FSU must vacate all wins an ineligible athlete played in, and that could stretch as far back as 2006, when this all began and FSU officials were unaware of any of this.

That being said, the NCAA said today it didn't have any evidence that Florida State had knowingly played ineligible athletes.

So, bear with me while I continue to report.
