Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans, who tore his left ACL this past summer and missed the entire season, won't play in the Chick-fil-A Bowl despite returning to practice on a limited basis, athletic trainer Mike Goforth said today.
"He will not play," Goforth said. "It doesn't make sense to put him out there and risk it. We're looking more at spring ball, when he can come out there 100 percent."
Goforth said Evans will travel to Atlanta for the bowl game against Tennessee, but won't dress. Evans has still been limited in practices and has done some individual drill work, but hasn't participated in any team drills. Goforth said Evans is still what he would consider to be "ahead of schedule."
"Another month from now we probably could've swung it," Goforth said, "but I just didn't think it was right to him. ... As much as I'd love to push the envelope, I think it'd be too great a risk for him. He's had a great rehab; he's worked his tail off and I've very proud of him."
