BC announces more hires

Kevin Lempa has been named coach of the Boston College secondary, and Sean McGowan has been named special teams’ coordinator and SAM linebackers/nickel package coach, the school announced today.

A few excerpts from the release:

Lempa, in his 40th year of coaching, returns for his third stint at BC after serving as the defensive coordinator at Columbia in 2012 and at Central Connecticut State in 2011. Previously, Lempa coached at Boston College from 2003-06 working with the defensive backs under Tom O’Brien and from 1981-90 working with the outside linebackers and special teams under Jack Bicknell.

“I’m excited to have Kevin [Lempa] be a part of the staff,” coach Steve Addazio said. “He will coach the secondary. Kevin has an extensive background here at Boston College having coached with Jack Bicknell and having coached with Tom O’Brien. He’s recruited some of the finest players that have played here. He understands what Boston College is all about. His background goes back to Maine, to Boston College, to the San Diego Chargers, to being the defensive coordinator at Hawaii. He coached at Maryland with Don Brown. We are very excited to have Kevin back here to join our staff and know he will be a tremendous teacher and tremendous leader of our young men.”

McGowan, in his 16th year of coaching, joins BC after spending the last two years coaching the inside linebackers at Temple under Addazio, picking up special teams duties this past season.

In 2011, McGowan coached an Owls defense that ranked third in the nation in scoring defense and produced, Tahir Whitehead, a 2012 fifth round pick of the Detroit Lions, who earned All-MAC honors as a senior. Last season, McGowan guided true freshman LB Tyler Matakevich to Big East Rookie of the Year accolades.

“I’ve known Sean McGowan as a player and as a coach since 1988,” Addazio said. “He’s a tremendous family man and a tremendous football coach. Sean will be the special teams’ coordinator and his responsibilities will include coaching the SAMs [linebackers] and the nickel packages on defense. We’re very excited to have Sean join the staff.”
