New York Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly was incensed over the way the NFL determined which tenant would open the new Meadowlands Stadium.
The NFL flipped a coin Monday, and the New York Giants won. Problem was, a Jets representative wasn't present.
In an apparent compromise, the league announced Monday afternoon the Giants would host the first regular-season game Sept. 12, but the Jets will play in the first preseason game in August and the regular-season Monday night opener Sept 13.
"After extensive discussions with both teams, we have come up with what we believe is a unique approach for celebrating the opening of the new Meadowlands Stadium," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.
It also should be noted that the Jets had the honor of closing Giants Stadium, which didn't seem right from the moment the 2009 schedule was announced.
