The New England Patriots are getting knocked around pretty hard.

Left guard Logan Mankins seems entrenched in his refusal to sign a contract. His replacement, Nick Kaczur, could be out for the season with a back injury.

Now comes news defensive end Ty Warren could miss the season with a hip problem.

ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss, citing an unnamed source close to Warren, reports the eighth-year veteran might need season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Warren didn't play in Thursday night's preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints in Gillette Stadium. Free-agent signee Gerard Warren started in his place.

Ty Warren recorded 57 tackles, a sack and four quarterback hits in 13 games last year.

As Reiss explains, defensive ends in the Patriots' 3-4 system rarely get the glory.

"The things that he does for the people around him and us, it goes unspoken," Patriots linebackers coach Pepper Johnson said. "He is a strong character in the locker room. He is a strong character in our meetings. He's a stand-up guy.

"He's a guy that if he misses a play, or if he blows a play out there on the field, he stands up and says 'That was me, and that's not going to happen again.' You can't have enough of those type of guys out on the field."

UPDATE: Reiss just tweeted that the Patriots will place Ty Warren on season-ending injured reserve. Click here for the full story.
