Bills QB Edwards in doubt for preseason finale

Buffalo Bills QB Trent Edwards was held out of 11-on-11 drills Wednesday, increasing speculation he might not play in Thursday night's preseason finale.

If Edwards can't go, then he will enter the regular season with only four series and 16 passes thrown throughout the preseason.

It has been eight days since he suffered a deep quadriceps bruise in a backfield collision with RB Marshawn Lynch. Edwards also missed Sunday night's exhibition with the Indianapolis Colts.

J.P. Losman started in place of Edwards and was effective with the first-teamers, completing 13 of 19 passes for 108 yards.

Edwards returned to practice on Tuesday. He claimed he felt fine today, but Bills head coach Dick Jauron said the second-year pro from Stanford was "probably still a little bit sore."

Jauron said he would make a call on Edwards right before Thursday night's home game with the Detroit Lions.

"I haven't been told anything as of right now, and I'm kind of going to see how it goes," Edwards said. "We have meetings tonight, and I'm sure I'll know more about it by that point.

"Again, I'm trying to get better, and I'm trying to get healthy. I'm very, very concerned with our game a week from Sunday, and that's kind of where I'm at right now."

Jauron tried to stiff-arm questions about the offense and whether it might be held back if Edwards weren't able to play.

"He has had a ton of time in our offseason program and our OTAs," Jauron said. "He's never missed a day. He's had a good deal of time. Now, if you're talking about game time in this game, he's not going to gain a lot more either were he to play -- and he may."

Losman, the starter until Edwards beat him out last year, has completed 24 of 33 attempts for 200 yards and a touchdown in the preseason. His passer rating is 98.0.

Edwards has gone 10 of 16 for 122 yards and two touchdowns for a passer rating of 125.5. In his last performance, he methodically conducted two drives that ended with TD passes to TE Robert Royal against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Toronto.
