But who knew it would get this ugly this fast?
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News has a revealing report Wednesday on the third-year quarterback. Mehta quotes multiple Jets players and sources who said they do not believe Sanchez is the long-term solution. The Jets (8-8) lost three in a row to end the regular season and missed the playoffs in large part due to Sanchez's poor play at quarterback.
"How can we [win a Super Bowl] when he's not improving at all?" one anonymous Jets player told the Daily News. "He thinks he is, but he's not. He has shown us what he's capable of."
And the criticism continued.
"We have to bring in another quarterback that will make him work at practice," another anonymous teammate said. "He's lazy and content because he knows he's not going to be benched."
Added another Jets teammate, "They don't want to be truthful with him. They treat him like a baby instead of a man. He goes in a hole when someone tells him the truth."
Some within the Jets also are clamoring for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to replace Sanchez in 2012, according to the report. Manning missed the entire 2011 season following neck surgery, and his health status is unknown.
Sanchez's issues continue to mount, and this is just the beginning. The Jets are a team built to win now and cannot wait any longer for their quarterback to catch up.
Usually these things are kept in-house. But Jets players are sending a clear message to their quarterback by letting their frustrations boil over publicly and in the media.
