The AFC East blog continues its series this week on highly-touted draft picks who need to show up in 2012. Next we take a look at a defensive end for the New England Patriots.
Bust Watch: DE Jermaine Cunningham
Pick: Second round, 2010
Analysis: Cunningham is part of a long list of recent second-round misses for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Cunningham showed a few flashes as a rookie in 2010 (34 tackles, one sack) but took a step back in 2011 (one tackle). Injuries played a part. But Cunningham also saw little playing time in his nine games before going on injured reserve. The Patriots can no longer wait for Cunningham to develop in his third season. This is a huge training camp for him. Our friends at ESPNBoston.com estimate Cunningham's chances of making the 53-man roster at just 35 percent. Perhaps the writing was on the wall when New England signed veteran defensive end Trevor Scott for depth this offseason. If Scott stays healthy, he could take Cunningham's roster spot.
