Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting the Buffalo Bills offered a third-round pick "and other compensation" to the Kansas City Chiefs for tight end Tony Gonzalez, but the future Hall of Famer didn't want to play for the Bills.
Had perennial Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez embraced the chance to play in Buffalo rather than reject it, he would have found out what the late, great Tim Russert knew.
Buffalo is a great football town. It reveres its football heroes. And the football team is pretty compelling -- certainly more compelling these days than the Kansas City Chiefs.
The other teams in the Gonzalez derby reportedly were the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons.
Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal wrote late Wednesday night Gonzalez wouldn't consider the Bills or Falcons, that he wanted to play for the Packers. Wilde reported the Packers thought they had a deal and drew up the paperwork for a third-round choice before Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson asked for a second-rounder 10 minutes before the Tuesday deadline.
