ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss appeared on "SportsCenter" to discuss Wes Welker's comments about playing for Bill Belichick, admitting he was "a little bit surprised" by the remarks and putting them in context with the Welker-Belichick relationship.
"We knew it wasn't all roses between Belichick and Welker when Welker was here," Reiss said, "but at the same time, also know how hard it was for Welker to leave here. Right down to the end, and I know this for a fact, Welker was on the phone with Belichick talking about contract numbers right up to that final decision to go to Denver.
"So I think this is one of those situations where you read the quotes and on the surface they seem very strong, but there's a lot more to the story in terms of context here for Wes Welker's remarks."
Asked by anchor John Anderson if he has ever heard such grumbling in Foxborough, Reiss says "it's not really a news flash that Bill Belichick is a hard coach to play for," noting that Belichick himself has acknowledged as much in the past.
Reiss also notes that it's no secret that members of Belichick's staff watch what Patriots players say to the media very closely.
