Stepping away from free agency, New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan hit the scouting trail on Wednesday, flying halfway across the country to check out quarterback Baker Mayfield at the Oklahoma pro day.
Maccagnan certainly got an up-close view of the Heisman Trophy winner. ESPN colleague Jeff Darlington covered the pro day and posted this on Twitter:

The Jets are doing a lot of homework on Mayfield, who could be available with the sixth overall pick in the draft. They met with him at the Senior Bowl and the scouting combine, and they're planning to bring him to New Jersey for a pre-draft visit. They also could return to Oklahoma for a private workout.
Mayfield, speaking last Friday at the Maxwell Awards in Atlantic City, New Jersey, said his combine meeting with the Jets "went well. I met with them at the Senior Bowl for a little bit. Kind of had a small introduction with some of the offensive guys and more of their staff was there at the combine. Went smooth, watched some more film. Sat down and got to know them a little bit more. Talked through some ball, getting to know them at a personal level so they know what they are getting. Think it went well."
