Scott's loss no surprise for Ravens

Posted by ESPN.com's James Walker

Linebacker Bart Scott leaving the Baltimore Ravens is a substantial loss, but it's no surprise.

Most expected the Ravens to lose Scott, who has agreed to a five-year, $40 million deal with the New York Jets according to ESPN's John Clayton. With three big-name linebackers -- Scott, Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs -- all headed for free agency, there was little chance of Baltimore keeping all three and many figured Scott would be the odd man out.

The Ravens used the franchise tag to keep Suggs and are still hopeful negotiating with Lewis. Scott joined his former defensive coordinator in Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who will run the same scheme that Scott flourished in.

Scott joins a list of linebackers to recently leave the Ravens, which include Adalius Thomas and Ed Hartwell. Baltimore was able to continue its success over the years, but now it makes it more important not to lose Lewis.

The potential of losing Scott, Lewis and Ryan in one offseason would drastically hurt Baltimore's defense. The unit was ranked No. 2 in the NFL last year as the Ravens advanced to the AFC title game.
