Palmer out Thursday vs. Patriots

Palmer Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will miss Thursday's preseason game against the New England Patriots, ESPN's Bob Holtzman reports.

The Bengals are now describing Palmer's injury as a "mild to moderate high-ankle sprain," which was suffered in the preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints.

High-ankle sprains could take up to several weeks of recovery. But Holtzman reports Palmer expects to return in time for the final two preseason games.

Palmer needs all the work he can get after missing 12 games last year with a serious elbow injury. The fate of the Bengals, who could be one of the NFL's surprise teams this season, mostly depends on Palmer's ability to stay healthy.
