The Ravens have significantly improved their run game, jumping up 19 spots to rank No. 9 in yards per carry this season.
The reason? The three-year, $11 million investment Baltimore made in free agent Vonta Leach this summer.
The hard-hitting fullback has led the way for Ravens running backs to average 123.8 yards per game (ninth in the NFL) and 4.3 yards per carry. Last season, the Ravens averaged 3.8 yards per carry, which was fifth-worst in the league.
Sunday marks Leach's first game against his former team, the Houston Texans, where he was the lead blocker for NFL rushing champion Arian Foster last season. Leach said this is just another game for him.
"There were no hard feelings when I left there," Leach told the team's website. "I would say that, obviously, they had other needs and I wasn't important enough for the team. I wasn't high enough on the totem pole. I was the odd man out. You can't pay everybody."
