The new staff under Rob Chudzinski will resemble the Chargers' old one, if the recently hired Browns head coach has his way.
In addition to reports that Chudzinski has already decided on Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator, he is also targeting Chargers defensive coordinator John Pagano for the same role in Cleveland, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Some believed, including myself, that Dick Jauron had a good chance of staying because the defense had made strides in two years with him as coordinator.
Chudzinski talked repeatedly about wanting an "attacking" style of football, and if John Pagano is anything like his brother Chuck, the Browns will be very aggressive if he is hired. Hiring John Pagano would also fit the expected shift from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4.
The Browns aren't the only ones who are interested in Pagano. The Chiefs also wanted him for their defensive coordinator, but the Chargers have not let him out of his contract just yet. San Diego is still searching for its new head coach, and could possibly retain Pagano.
Under Pagno in 2012, the Chargers ranked ninth in yards allowed and 16th in points given up (21.9).
